It is a matter of circumstance as well as the scope of the project that you are willing to undertake. Starting any business is never easy and if it were, everyone would be doing it.

First of all, clearly defining what your goals and vision are for this business is important and an iterative process. Iteration is key, as your customers’ wants and needs may in fact be different from how you perceive them to be (no matter how much market research you have done). For example, when I started MOBI (on demand auto service and repair ), I knew that price elasticity would be very tricky until we built up our brand equity and awareness. Indeed, this was a major challenge for us as we had to incur relatively large losses as we were getting our name out there. As an added-on service that we provided to our customers for those repairs that needed to be performed in the shop, we would offer free concierge service to take our customers’ cars to our store. What I had overlooked is that many people were untrusting of us, a relatively unknown company, picking up their car! This may seem like a trivial detail, however, it is an important one as it is another layer of cognitive dissonance that needed to be addressed with the customer.

Once you have a solid plan and you are willing to embrace that your business idea may have to adapt to market and consumer conditions, you will need to ask yourself if you are willing and able to commit to such an endeavor. Building a company from scratch is painful. It will always be difficult and challenging throughout its life cycle.
